About Me

Michele I started quilting in 1990. I made my first quilt when I didn't know I couldn't quilt. The only sewing I had ever done prior was garment sewing. When I made the quilt, I backstitched and reinforced every seam with a zig-zag stitch. I went through spools and spools of thread! It was a Double Irish Chain quilt for my boyfriend. It apparently looked okay, because he married me! He is now one of my greatest supporters.

Though I had made a few quilts, I didn’t really become a quilter until my sister got married. My grandmother had hand quilted a quilt for the wedding of each of her grandchildren until me. I got the last one. At that point, Grandma’s macular degeneration forced her to stop as she became legally blind. I knew she was greatly bothered by this, so I made my sister a quilt for her wedding – as much for Grandma, as for my sister. Though I machine quilt, Grandma was still quite pleased, my sister liked it, and I became a real quilter.

I was purchasing fabric at my local quilt shop (where they know me by name). The clerk asked what I was going to do with the fabric. Well, I have sons that I wanted to make quilts for, but as there aren't that many patterns for boys, I was designing my own. The clerk looked at me, and told me that I should be publishing my patterns. I smiled, and said thank you, but thought I have no time to design quilts. The thought persisted however. I mentioned it to my husband, who thought it was an excellent idea. Bold Tomato Designs was born. I now design and publish patterns, do commissioned work, Longarm work, teach, and, oh yeah, quilt!
